Temporary ferry service under urgent consideration

In its latest update, LBHF says that a temporary ferry service is under urgent consideration following the closure of Hammersmith Bridge.

Three detailed proposals for a ferry boat service are actively under consideration. Officers from Hammersmith & Fulham, Richmond Council, Transport for London and the Port of London Authority will meet the potential operators for urgent talks on Monday 21 September.

We are told that several proposals have been put forward, and the three most advanced plans are being considered.

Any proposal will need to overcome issues including temporary walkways and pontoons, or the use of existing piers and landing sites. It is pretty clear that both the tidal range and the speed of flow will present difficulties for any ferry service.

An ambitious target of the end of October - when the clocks go back and the nights grow longer - has been set. All the authorities working on the project are committed to fast-tracking planning and licensing approvals with passenger safety as the paramount issue.
